1 +# Meals Roster for young families
2 +
3 +When our daughter was born, our good friend Gina Rembe organised for friends to deliver home cooked meals for a month.
4 +It's pretty hard to convey how amazing this was - simultaneously the most practical and personal gift we could have received.
5 +
6 +I've since paid this gift forward for another friend, and want to empower others to do the same.
7 +
8 +![](meal_roster.jpg)
9 +
10 +## Steps
11 +
12 +This isn't complicated, but working with people and writing carefully can take a bunch of time and energy.
13 +Hopefully this makes your life easier.
14 +
15 +### 1. Propose the idea
16 +
17 +The idea is to make this easy for them, tell them the plan is:
18 +- collect emails
19 +- send people and email inviting them to join the roster
20 +- they get food delivered
21 +- you'll handle all the details
22 +
23 +Exepecting parents might have a lot on their minds.
24 +I would recommend being a little opinionated and _telling_ them you're going to organise this as your gift to them.
25 +
26 +
27 +### 2. Send the invitation out
28 +
29 +1. set up the meal roster spreadsheet somewhere online
30 +2. tune the invitation email, then check it's ok with the family
31 + - **also check about any food requirements** (e.g. allergies, dietary restrictions)
32 +3. send it out!
33 +
34 +Templates:
35 + - email I sent - [invitation.md](invitation.md)
36 + - meal roster - [meal_roster.csv](meal_roster.csv) | [google spreadsheets version](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1z3fQdPHAPE_X6cvOC9jl6Ul1aP13hEWBDHP2lE6KfFU/edit?usp=sharing)
37 + - it's got blank dates in it, you'll put real dates in when the baby is born
38 + - the online shops are New Zealand based ones
39 +
40 +Notes:
41 + - I had the invitation sent out about 3 weeks before the due date (because babies can and do arrive early!)
42 + - I CC'd the whole list of friends. This was partly so people knew who I was, and partly to make subsequent announcements easy.
43 +
44 +
45 +### 3. Send the ALL SYSTEMS GO! email
46 +
47 +Keep in touch with one person in the family (probably the one not pregnant) to know when they're likely to be home from the hospital (can take 2-5 days).
48 +
49 +1. update the dates in the spreadsheet
50 + - do it manually
51 + - OR use a fancy spreadsheet formula (you can see how I did it in the second tab of the [google spreadsheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1z3fQdPHAPE_X6cvOC9jl6Ul1aP13hEWBDHP2lE6KfFU/edit?usp=sharing))

1 +Hello good humans,
2 +
3 +As you’re probably aware **PARENTS_NAMES** are expecting a child sometime in the next weeks. This email is an invitation to support them by stocking them with easy meals to fuel their young family.
4 +
5 +To give them a helping hand from near and far, I’ve prepared this meal roster (**LINK_TO_MEAL_ROSTER**) that anyone who’s keen is welcome to contribute to. The idea is that you pick a date and make sure that they have some dinner (and/or lunch/snacks) on that day—whether it’s a home-cooked meal, something from the supermarket or perhaps a take-away that gets delivered.
6 +
7 +Food that is always useful: easy snack food (nuts, fruit, cake, bread); foods high in protein (beans, lentils, tofu, egg, meat, muesli with nuts); things you can eat with one hand.
8 +
9 +If you do end up dropping it round in person, here are some handy hints for visiting new parents (replace ‘mother’ with ‘parents’ in this article).

12 +Their address is **FAMILY_ADDRESS**

14 +Kind regards,
