show counts of open/closed issues and pull-requests

I think this is a lower hanging fruit than notifications, but it would make a big difference to just be able to see how many open issues there are, instead of having to click through to the page.

It indexes issue state on startup and shows "…" instead of a number before the indexing is done. Time to index may range from a few seconds to a minute or more
