10-Gwen Bell is a Mexico City, Mexico based programmer and technical writer. She [believes](/beliefs) in practicing and building with distributed technologies, so she set off on a journey in 2013 with a [goal to master](/31daysofcommits) Linux. A goal she has now acheived (in her perspective).

1414 ### (Mexico) Backstory
1515
1616 I visited Mexico for the first time in 2006. I fell in love with the place, the people, the language, the food, the colors, the smells, the sounds. As an entrepreneur I felt drawn to the spirit of entrepreneurship I sensed everywhere.
1717
1818 I traveled a bunch after that. I lived in Colorado, and used that as a jumping off point to lots of places. I spoke at and attended conferences in give or take ¼ of the fifty US States. I traveled. And I kept thinking and talking about Mexico.
1919
20-I returned to Mexico in 2009 for what I called a post wedding vacation. I enjoyed Mexico even more on the second visit.
20 +I returned to Mexico in 2009, lived in the country in 2011, then returned in 2013. Save a few months during 2015/16 and visa runs I've lived in Mexico City since 2013. I do the work -- web development and technical writing -- here. I shop locally, buy hand-made and hand-grown food and other sundry bits. There are challenges to living in this city, as there are challenges to living in any big city. Some of the sidewalks are dangerous in their unevenness. Some days the air pollution is so bad I stay inside rather than walk around. That said, I notice air quality improvements over previous years. I'm grateful to be a guest here.

2422 If you're visiting Mexico City and want to meet, please [let me know](/contact). If you visit and don't want to meet but still want to know what I recommend, here's what I recommend: tea tree oil. There are loads of mosquitoes right now. Also, I use my [neti pot](/belongings) often to keep the smog levels in check on a personal level.
