Session title

Secure Scuttlebutt: peer-to-peer collaboration and community infrastructure

Session type

Presentation (45 minutes)

Summary * A brief summary, this will be printed on the Web site and in the program. Please aim for a maximum of 150 words.

Secure Scuttlebutt is a technology for decentralized, peer-to-peer, offline-first social media applications based on cryptographic identities. We will introduce the Secure Scuttlebutt network and protocol. We will present some of the applications on the network, for social networking, games, and code collaboration. We will look at the values and culture emergent on the network, how it organizes and funds itself, how it practices diversity and inclusion, and where it may head in the future.

Abstract The LibrePlanet program committee will use this to understand your proposed talk. Please limit this to 300 words.

We would like to introduce Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) to the Free Software Community. We would start with a brief technical part to present the fundamental data stuctures and topology of the network. We would explain how the protocol is designed to maximize autonomy of users and promote the development of social software. We would show the applications on the network: Patchwork, the "flagship" application, and others like Patchbay (including Chess), Patchfox (Firefox extension), patchfoo (Web 1.0 interface), Manyverse (Android app), and git-ssb (P2P git repository hosting and pull request management), and other implementations. We would explain how moderation works on the network through the use of blocking. We would also look at how the community has organized funding its maintenance and development. We would show the principles of the community and how that was decided on. We would show how the community is hosting events and practicing diversity and inclusion. We would look at some of the culture on the network, including the solarpunk aesthetic, and how the design and structure of the protocol influences the culture, such as through immutability. We would look at graph visualizations of the network, and show research that was published about the network.
