title: 'Names: why is it called sbot, scuttlebot, patch-whatever' date: 2016-10-25T14:52:00 layout: post.jade

collection: blog

The scuttlebot project has evolved from being called cyphernet, scuttlebot, phoenix and a few other things. Here's a short history to how it made it to patchbay and/or patchwork.

There is a million things named "phoenix". Even firefox was originally meant to be called phoenix! We had a massive thread about potential names, and even with great suggestions like "buru" and "dogestream" there where exactly zero names which everyone was happy with. I can't remember which repo the rename thread was on, last time I looked I couldn't find it...Eventually I put my foot down, decided not to rename the protocol. then @paul said he wanted to call the front end app "patchwork". I was like, okay sure just please don't ask anyone else's opinion! - @Dominic

There's a petname system inside scuttlebot so you can rename things to your choosing.
